History of Seven Pillars Yoga

The Seven Pillars Yoga Teacher Training was founded in 2019 by Tina Margareta Nilssen. The training is internationally certified by the Yoga Alliance International. It springs out of the Musicians’ Health and Movement Institute where there has been a certification in the movement system Timani running since 2013. The system provides effective guidance and preparation to coordinate the body in a healthy and sustainable way while performing tasks such as playing an instrument or singing. The principles apply also for anyone seeking depth and clarity to how the body and mind work together as a whole. Therefore this training and yoga form is for all body types and anyone wanting to learn and explore.

For several years there was a growing request amongst the increasing number of Timani students to be able to spread the knowledge lying within Timani to a larger group of people. The Seven Pillars Yoga will be an accessible way to provide this, and also to create a possibility to give a more holistic and systematic way to train the body and mind without compromising any of the principles that are in yoga, nor in the Timani movement system, as these will enhance the practice of yoga in every way.

With Tina’s own background in yoga, the step into founding a yoga school was natural. She has practiced yoga since the age of 16 (since 1993) and took her 200h yoga teacher training at the Nordic Yoga School in Stockholm/India in 2011, as well as the advanced 300h training at Udaya/Jules Mitchell Yoga & Biomechanics in the USA in 2018. 


After working with movement health and mental health since 2002, teaching movement to thousands of musicians since 2007, the Seven Pillars Yoga has a foundation of both knowledge and hands on experience.

In addition to yoga and music, Tina has a background as a Massage Therapist, a Kinetic Control practitioner, a Psychosomatic bodyworker, meditation teacher and as a mental coach and therapist.

Seven Pillars Yoga represents a holistic view of the human body and mind and aims for a unique exploration into getting to know oneself on a deeper level. This is attained through concentration and awareness, asanas and pranayama.

The physical part of Seven Pillars Yoga is a combination of dynamic Hatha yoga and slow Timani exercises that prepare the body for an optimal coordination and balance during the yoga asanas. These are attuned with scientific and biomechanical principles. The mindfulness part aims to give a direct experience of awareness within and create a physical flow through the body in different positions. There are instructions connected to the applied biomechanical principals, but still leaving a space for exploration to open and expand the body in an individual way.

The students learn about anatomy, movement, biomechanics, the science of stretching, the history and science of yoga and health, yoga philosophy, Ayurveda and nutrition, Yoga Nidra, Pranayama, Yoga asanas and how to lead and teach a class.
